I’ve always loved making things with gingerbread, and when Kaiser’s Emergency PPE Team gave me a Glowforge laser cutter I decided to try to push the gingerbread envelope.
I started by finding a copy of the blueprints for the Golden Gate Bridge.
I knocked together a quick model and thickened everything to make it a little less likely to snap.
I worked up a decent cutting profile for my prebaked slabs of gingerbread but quickly realized that I was going to have to build a better ventilation system to handle the smell.
The pieces came out pretty well!
Everything was going well until I decided to dissolve some orange edible pigment powder in alcohol and airbrush it on.
The alcohol dissolved the frosting bonds and the whole bridge collapsed…
